Bicycle Skirt

I absolutely love this bicycle print fabric. It’s been in my stash for a couple of years at least one of which it was halfway to becoming a Colette Meringue skirt. That was until yesterday when I made the decision to finally get it finished. There was one problem though. Over the pasy year or so I lost half the pieces I’d cut out so decided to improvise and just make up a nee skirt. I’m glad I did as this skirt is such a great fit and is so wearable I know I’m going to wear it loads.

Vintage Pattern Month- Part 2

I’ve managed to get the bulk of my dress together with only fitting the bodice more neatly and hemming to go so I thought I’d share with you my progress so far:

My favourite part so far is the bias binding on the arms and neck. I hand stitched it and I’m so glad I did as I think it just makes it look so much neater.

Vintage Pattern Month- Part 1

I have finally come in from the lovely weather and made a start of my vintage pattern this month. I was going to pick this one but when I went to look for it in my pattern folder I stumbled across this beauty and decided it would make a great summer frock…

I’m going for option C with the skirt length of option A. I am also going to use bias binding at the neck and arms instead of facings. Mainly because I am in love with my bias binding maker and I want any excuse to use it. 

Choosing a fabric wasn’t easy but I settled on this lovely cotton I got in the John Lewis sale.

with that chosen I ironed out my pattern pieces and fabric and got started cutting and marking everything. 

 

Crochet Wedding Blanket

I’ve started work on another crochet wedding blanket for a wedding in June and I am beginning to panic about it so I need some honest opinions! I am worrying that the colours I have chosen are going to be too garish. I’ve picked bring sunny colours for a couple of reasons, the bride and groom are bright, sunny people so I thought it would be nice to try and incorporate their personalities in the blanket. I also selcted the red and yellow for luck and fortune (in Chinese culture, they are traditional wedding colours) and the orange to incorporate the groom’s favourite football team. Looking at all the balls of wool together I thought they were a lovely warm, bright combination;

20130209_123511 20130209_123515I’ve just powered on for the moment and the blanket is getting bigger, I’ve mixed up the squares so some are plain, like the orange above and some are mixed. All squares have a pale yellow border which I was hoping would bring the design together a bit. I was wondering if a plain one colour border around the whole blanket would maybe tie it all together? I need some help here!

Healthy Bran Muffins

I’ve been digging up some old recipes I enjoyed during childhood. This one was a family favourite and by happy coincidence is high in fibre, low in fat, and has no added sugar. It makes a great breakfast on the run or afternoon snack. You can adapt the recipe to include nuts, fruits, spices, sugar, anything you like really. This is my favourite version, recipe below. Be warned, these are not light fluffy cakes, because of all the fruit and bran they are quite dense.

Recipe Instructions:

Pick a mug of any size you like, I used a medium sized one and it would make about 12 muffins or one decent sized loaf.

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius

Lightly grease a loaf tin or line a muffin tin with pretty liners.

Ingredients:

1 mug all bran

1 mug self raising flour

1 mug dried fruit

1 mug milk

1 egg

1 tsp ground ginger.

Instructions:

1- Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl. Allow to sit for 30 minutes until the bran soften.

2- Place mix into loaf tin or muffin cases and bake for 1-1.5 hours for a loaf and 30mins-1 hour for the muffins, depending on the size. You can tell the cakes are cooked when a skewer comes away clean.

3- Allow to cool and then munch!

 

Emergency Crochet!

Last weekend I went to visit a friend in the Scottish Borders. However, before I’d even left work I realised I hadn’t packed any winter woolies…disaster in this snowy weather! Luckily I had packed wool and a crochet hook so I quickly got to work on some mitts and a hat. They may not be the highest quality items that I’ve even made but they did the job and kept me warm and cosy over the weekend. Don’t you just love it when crafting comes to the rescue!
